2019 and 2020 National Debate Tournament and National Speech Tournament/National Individual Events Tournament Results

2020 Results

Unfortunately, due to the COVID pandemic, both the National Debate Tournament and National Speech Tournament governing committees decides to cancel the 2020 tournaments.

Future NDT Hosts:

    • 2021 – Harvard University (online)
    • 2022 – James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA)
    • 2023 – Wake Forest University (Chantilly, VA)

NST tournament news:

The National Individual Events Tournament changed its name to the National Speech Tournament.

The 2019 Outstanding New Coach Awards:

    • Jordan Johnson, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
    • Ryan Tinlin, University of Texas-Austin

Dr. Nance Riffe (University of North Carolina-Charlotte) was elected as the tournament committee chair. Shannon LaBove (Rice University) continues as committee secretary. Darren Epping (Kansas State University) is the Vice Chair. Dave Gaer (Lone Star College – North Harris) was elected as the tournament director for the 2021 tournament.

The 2021 tournament will be hosted online.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host the NST in 2022.

NDT

73rd NDT hosted by University of Minnesota (Host: Dr. David Cram Helwich; Tournament Director: Sarah Partlow Lefevre (Idaho State)).

Tournament was won by the University of Kentucky (Dan Bannister and Anthony Trufanov). The University of Georgia (Nathan Rice and Johnnie Stupek) finished in second place. Kentucky won the finals on a 6-1 decision.

NIET/NST

Hosted by the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa (Host: Bobby Imbody; Tournament Director: Dave Gaer (Lone Star College – University Park). 391 students participating from 61 schools for a total of 1147 entries.

Western Kentucky University won the Team Sweepstakes Award and Tyler Junior College Won the Team Community College Sweepstakes Award. Andrea Ambam (Western Kentucky) was the IE Sweepstakes Champion for the second consecutive year.
